Print of a watercolour painting was inspired by a pencil sketch and John’s memories of growing up in a colliery village in Usworth, County Durham. The lads are playing a game which was called ‘doors’ or ‘gates’ which helped them hone their skills in dribbling, shooting, barging and hacking opponents. One of the lads in the picture became a schoolboy international and a professional footballer.
